After my last post I had the idea to add some icons in my server management to show when paths aren't available. But I have screwed up VServer I think.

So I changed the backup path to the desktop just for testing and restarted the server:

; The path, where backups are stored.
SYSTEMBACKUPFOLDER = /Users/beatrixwillius/Desktop

But now I can't open anything anymore because nothing is accessible. See screenshots from my app and from VStudio. Bug, stupidity or feature? And yes, I like to make everything kaputt.

Valentina Studio can't show current paths in the latest versions of VServer, these properties were renamed, the fix will be available in the next version.

If master file is new/created again (in the Database folder), it has no user. You must use your db with the generic "sa"/"sa".

Don't you see it when you clic on the server admin icon (in the toolbar) ?

Yes, I wanted to register the databases again. But how do I do that when I can't see the databases at all in VStudio?

You unregistered both databases from the server at step 2.
You must now (step 6) register again the db that you moved at step 4.

The latest version of ValentinaStudio has fixed the problem with the database paths. Thanks, guys!

However, I can't get changing the paths to work:

1. I unregistered the 2 databases I have made.
2. Changed the path for Valentina Databases to the new path.
3. Used stop_me.sh to stop the server.
4. Moved the 2 databases to the new location.
5. Used start_me.sh to start the server.
6. Unfortunately, I now have no databases. See screenshot.

What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I'll wait for the next release. But I still need the idiots guide for changing the directories.

@François Van Lerberghe: yes, that makes sense.

@Valentina guys: I should have checked Valentina Studio. But even there I get confused.

I've tried to select a new folder for Valentina databases in VStudio -> Server Admin Properties. Screenshot "select folder 1" shows that folders for the current user can't be selected. However, when I switch to another location and then back to the user ("select folder 2";) then I can select the folders. I've created a folder for the databases in the main document folder - just for testing - and changed the permissions of the folder to root. VStudio seems to select the folder and then reverts back to the default location (screenshot "result";). I then tried with a folder in an external hard disk with the same result.

Can you give me the idiots guide to changing folders? I'm not a DBA and seem to be missing something simple here.

master file records the path of the db too. If you change the database folder, I'm not sure you can simply reuse the old master file since the db path isn't correct anymore. In this case, you must unregister your db, change the db folder, copy the old master file and your db in the new db folder and finally register again your db.

sa/sa didn't work. I deleted the VServer folder and reinstalled everything.

Another - probably stupid - question: can I restart VServer from within VStudio?

VServer is restarting after I fixed the ini file. Now I can't log in - see screenshot.

It's really easy to shoot oneself into the foot when changing directories. I need to play around with this some more.

I suggest this :
In the Finder,
- go in the server folder
- copy the folder name of your backup folder (create one if it doesn't exist)
- open your configuration INI file
- at the SYSTEMBACKUPCATALOG line, type
SYSTEMBACKUPCATALOG = [the backup folder name copied earlier]
- Save
If you modified only this line, your server must restart correctly.

Now explore new configuration with other backup path.

1. Yes, this makes sense. However, I'm always testing odd stuff. Either don't allow me something or give me an error ("directory not allowed";). But don't bork everything.

2. Good idea. I'll try that.

1. I think, you are running vServer on behalf of root user, probably there is no access to your home folder for that user?

2. BTW, you may change verbose level in the INI.

The error is beyond strange. Please read above: the only things I did was to change the backup directory to the desktop folder. Then I did a restart of the server with the internal restart functionality.

The file was there before restarting and - of course - the file is there after restarting. See screenshot with kernel error.

I can't change the verbose level because the server is borked. At any verbose level the server should show errors why the darn thing terminates itself.

"Many logs" is just because of vServer is terminated, but scripts starts it again and again, so new logs created. It seems there is no way for something like "start attempt count".

Hard to say - if you set verbooseLevel=3, probably it would be more informative log?
And could you describe the detailed steps to reproduce it?
